Here’s what Jesus had to say about love

Jesus had some very challenging words about it.

Love is frequently connected to the good news of the Gospel, but what did Jesus actually say about it? Much more than an emotion or “fuzzy feeling,” love for Jesus was an exercise of the will, a disposition that informs a person’s every action.

Love is a topic in all four of the Gospels, but referenced the most in the Gospel of John, which is sometimes called the “Gospel of Love.”

Below are selections from the gospels highlighting Jesus’ own words about love and how it affects our entire lives.

You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. (Matthew 5:43-44)

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”  (Matthew 22:36-39)
Love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. (Luke 6:35)
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. (John 12:25)
If you love me, you will keep my commandments. (John 14:15)
Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)
He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” (John 21:17)
