Say this powerful prayer in front of a crucifix

It can stir within your soul a great love of God.

For many Christians, the presence of a crucifix in the home is a constant reminder of the great love of God for humanity. It is seen by everyone in the home and brings to mind those fateful events so long ago.

Besides being a silent reminder, the crucifix can also be a focal point of daily prayer. We can use the crucifix to direct attention to God, allowing everything else to fade in the background.

One way to do this is to pray this traditional prayer before a crucifix. It is a beautiful prayer that can stir within your heart a great love for God, recognizing the boundless love he has for each one of us.

Behold, O good and sweetest Jesus, I cast myself upon my knees in Thy sight, and with the most fervent desire of my soul I pray and beseech Thee to impress upon my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, with true repentance for my sins and a most firm desire of amendment: whilst with deep affection and grief of soul I consider within myself and mentally contemplate Thy five most precious Wounds, having before mine eyes that which David, the prophet, long ago spoke in Thine Own person concerning Thee, my Jesus: They have pierced My hands and My feet, they have numbered all My bones.

  • I have said this prayer all my life (at least 50 years) worded somewhat differently. It is the prayer I say when kneeling before the crucifix after receiving the Eucharist.

    Prayer Before A Crucifix

Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus, while before thy face I humbly kneel. With burning soul I pray and beseech thee to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope, and charity. With true repentance for my sins and a firm purpose of amendment, I contemplate with great love and tender pity thy five most precious wounds, calling to mind the words that David thy prophet said of thee, my Jesus. “They have pierced my hands and my feet. They have numbered all my bones.”

    Amen

  • Technically this is the prayer everyone should say as they kneel in the church before each Mass 🙂
